The next time you think it's getting a bit rough off Rossal Beach give a thought to the guys on these commercial fishing / shrimping boats returning from fishing off the coast of Washington and Oregon, where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean.
They are crossing the Columbia Bar, where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean, when the river is in full flow and the tide is coming in it makes for one hell of a ride, in fact it's designated as one of the most dangerous ports of entry anywhere in the world. There are at least eight to 10 deaths per year with people trying to get in or out in boats that are not made for this kind of wild ride.
The fishing boats are self-righting, {eventually}, have a super low center of gravity, sealed engine compartments, bullet proof glass windows, double steel hulls, you get the idea, you'd need all that as the waves/swell is often 35ft to 45ft tall.
It's one of those places where even the toughest of kayakers steer clear of...
